Life, the Universe, and Everything

On Monday, I turned 42.

On Tuesday, my daughter was born.

Meet Rose Marie "Petunia" Dandona. 7lb 2.8 oz, 19 3/4", born at 11:11pm on July 20, 2010. Mom and baby are doing awesome, we'll head home from the hospital this afternoon, have the grandparents visit, then go into hiding for at least the weekend.

Great Uncle Harold "Gerald" Robinette (January 28, 1934 - April 4, 2010)

I'll always remember him as Uncl' Ger'l, gnawing an unlit cigar and complaining about the dragon in the basement.

Death is Nothing at All
by Henry Scott Holland (1847-1918)
Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral
sometimes referred to as 'What is Death?'

Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other,
that we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way
which you always used.
Put no difference in your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was.
Let it be spoken without affect,
without the trace of a shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same that it ever was.
There is absolutely unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?

I am waiting for you,
for an interval,
somewhere very near,
just around the corner.

All is well.

Sometimes I have problems dressing myself.

I have a design background and the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old. I get dressed like Jackson Pollock painted.

But pale blue shirt with grey and white stripes looks good with grey tie with black, white, and blue stripes.

And last night, my dad gave me a grey pinstriped double-breasted jacket that fits perfectly. Since it is a thrift store find, I have no qualms about pairing it with faded jeans... and blue "Sailor Jerry" Chuck Taylors.

A funky new outfit makes me happy.
