Any Mac experts out there?

I have a dead ibook (dead screen, no power cord, dead battery).

If I remove the hard drive and put it into an external enclosure (probably USB), shouldn't I be able to plug that into my wife's MacBook and transfer the files?

Then I can plug it into my Linux box and reformat it to use as an external backup...

Is there a formatting option where the ext-HD would be usable by both the Mac and Linux, for large file transfers?

Another request for help (I'm so needy)

I'm compiling a show of my travel photography.

Let me know what your favorite photo of mine has been (from Paris, Scotland, the zoo, whatever).

I'm not providing any links; I want to know if any of them actually made enough of an impression that you can describe them to me.
